When it comes to weather stations, these devices do not exist in a vacuum. Those that use a weather station are going to use it collect data and/or look at the current conditions of the atmosphere. This is great and can serve a purpose but networks bring together these individuals and allow them to share information regarding the weather in a matter of seconds. These networks are numerous and they serve many a purpose, which will be described below. If you own a weather station or are considering buying one, consider the importance of network connectivity and what types of networks are out there prior to buying.
What Is A Weather Station Network?
To begin exploring more about this weather station topic, it is important to first define what a weather station network is. Weather station networks are used to connect users on the network and, more importantly, share the information that they are gathering about that particular area. This data is transmitted electronically and can provide a wider range look at what the current atmospheric trends are showing. These networks, then, are much like other networks. They allow for the sharing of data quickly and efficiently. The only difference is that these networks are based in sharing data about weather.
Networks in the United States
The United States has more than just one network for sharing. There are actually several. Some of these are regionally based. For instance, there is the Florida Automated Weather Network which allows for sharing of information in the state. There is also the Michigan Automated Weather Network, too. These are not the only two. There are ones in Iowa, Missouri, Georgia, and more. Oklahoma, too, has its own weather sharing network for those connected to a weather station.
The United States, though, does not stop there. There is also a network that looks at information across the United States. The National Weather Service Cooperative Observer, also known as COOP, shares data from state to state. This is great for those that want to look at the wider trends in the United States and make predictions for weather across the country via the different regional and local weather station data.
The Lower Hemisphere
The United States has many different networks, as noted. But, this is not the only region of the world that has a weather station network. The Southern Hemisphere has options for those that want to look at and analyze the weather. There are several different choices. There are numerous networks that are regionally based in Australia. There is even an Antarctic weather station as well. This information can be looked at to better understand weather patterns in that area of the country and give an idea of what is going on there.
The World Wide Connection
There are weather stations that connect to more than just a small geographical region. These stations actually compare data on a global scale. These networks connect individuals in one country with individuals from other countries in a matter of seconds. There are two main weather station networks that are online today. These include CWOP and WUPWS. These two networks are growing and so, too, are other options. As technology advances, these networks are likely to grow as well.
What Do Weather Station Networks Do?
To say there is a network for sharing data and understanding why these networks matter are two very different things. A weather station network allows for real and true prediction of weather data. A singular station gathering weather statistics tells about that one place, which is great. But, this is limited in its value. By looking at regional, state, national, or even international weather statistics and data, a person or group can see a broader range of benefit. Therefore, those that want to join a network should know that they may actually be helping in predicting weather patterns across the world.
Not all stations will have access to networks. It is important that individuals know that there are certain criteria and steps to take in order to become part of the sharing. With that said, for those that do, the information that they are sharing is highly valuable and may just help predict the next big weather trend.
